North Sea shells are washed and used for a wide variety of applications, because they have some very useful and unique features. Firstly, shells have low Specific gravity. They are also permeable. In addition, they have a thermal insulating effect and contain a lot of calcite. For these reasons, washed North Sea shells are often used as a lightweight foundation or as insulation in crawl spaces and other areas with moisture and mould problems. They are also used to make paths in parks and woods.
